An observation on how distracted we’ve all become

The following extract is from the 'The State We're In: The 2010 Flux Trend Review', published by Pan MacMillan and due to be released in October 2009.


Is it possible that technology could cause one to lose their sense of perspective and even lead to the underperformance of entire economies? According to Bryan Appleyard, columnist at the London Sunday Times, distractions have that capacity. Appleyard quotes an American study, which found that $ 558 billion is lost to that country’s economy every year thanks to technologies such as mobile phones, email, sms and even social networks like Twitter and Facebook.
Appleyard argues that we believe that checking emails and attempting to simultaneously carry out other tasks - something we define as multitasking - is a good thing… but then again, maybe not.

CORPORATE COMPANIES THAT CARE
corporates that careGenerosity as a corporate and personal mindset is on the increase, replacing an approach dictated by profits at any cost. As far as business practice is concerned, taking is being replaced by giving in many areas of consumer life. President Barack Obama, leader of the world’s most powerful nation, signaled this shift in his inaugural address, when he ushered in a new era of caring and respect, both for the earth and for fellow human beings. It contrasts sharply with the President Bush era, when chasing instant profits – no matter how unsustainable - was the order of the day.

NEW MODEL FOR THE NEWS MEDIA
nyt share priceThe uncertain economic climate currently gripping the globe is finding a huge number of people out of jobs. It is not just the insurance giants and banking sector that have had to lay off staff, but also the mining, manufacturing and automotive industries. Now the media industry has also fallen victim to the global economic meltdown.

The New York Times (whose mother company has reportedly lost a bit more than US $100 million in revenue) reports that international news correspondents have been a casualty of budget-cutting organisations. Reports show major decline in ad revenue, which is the traditional source of income for news and media organisations in general. As a result many newspapers are being forced to shut down due to lack of funds and in some cases, bankruptcy.
